ABOUT

Joshua Waterstone

Joshua holds an M.F.A. in Directing for Stage and Screen from the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at U.N.L. where he was a Hixson Lied Fellow and a B.A. from U.G.A. Theatre and Film. He is an Artist and Digital Technical Director for The Theatre of Others which recently performed at the United Nation's Climate Change Conference COP 28 in Dubai. An ensemble theatre maker Joshua has been a company member of foolsFURY Theatre Company, Ragged Wing Ensemble and Fly-By Theatre. Joshua teaches and directs with Berkeley Repertory School of Theatre, Foothill College, The Yat/Bentley Centre for Performance and Google Arts. Other companies he has worked with are California Shakespeare Theatre (Cal Shakes), San Francisco Youth Theatre, Shakespearience, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Georgia Shakespeare, Horizon Theatre, Guilford College, GTCC, UNL, Alliance Theatre, Woodruff Arts Center, Kaiser Permanente Educational Theater, American Conservatory Theatre and PlayMakers Repertory Company. Regionally Joshua has taught and directed theatre in CA., NV., GA., NC., NE., IL. and internationally in Dubai, UAE and Baku, Azerbaijan.  Joshua is an Associate Member of the Society of Directors and Choreographers, a member of the Society of American Fight Directors and a 200 hour Classical Yoga Teacher.

 

Along with his acting, directing and teaching work he has experience as Director of Theatre Education and Artistic Director of the GTCC Center for Creative and Performing Arts Theater 2015-2018. Artistic Director of the theatre company Theatrix, from 2011-2014. Production Manager, Ensemble, Communications and Marketing and Education Director for Ragged Wing Ensemble Theatre 2018-2020. He has produced over 50 productions as well as originating the New Artists Festival Gallery, Staged Reading Series, and the Improv Troupe Spontaneous (GTCC) and Lazzi. (UNL). Joshua was given the Rex Mcgraw Theatrix Service Award for his contributions to Theatrix.

In theatre, Joshua has received accolades for his direction of Sarah Ruhl's comedy, Melancholy Play, which was a regional selection at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Region V. Festival. The production received meritorious awards in directing, lighting and acting. His collaboration with N.E. playwright Becky Key Boesen of BULLET: A Midwestern Murder Fantasia exploring The Starkweather murder spree won full production at the New Orleans Fringe Festival. 

Joshua was awarded Best Director for Theatrix 2012-2013 season.

Joshua was part of the Society of Directors and Choreographers Foundations 2014-2015, 2018-2019 Observership program and is a PlayGround-SF Directors Apprenticeship Alumni.

He is a collaborative director with a strong belief in imagination, risk taking and play.

In film Joshua produced and directed the short Cubical Life by Micah Kafka which received a Creative Project Grant from the Lincoln Arts Council, a

Nebby Award for best sound design, and won Best Micro Short at the

Bare Bones International Film Festival.

 

Both Cubical Life and the short film Phoenix which Joshua directed have been screened at the University FIlm and Video Associations International Conference. 

 

Joshua has performed regionally as an actor and improvisor in theatre and film and has been a member of the improvisation troupes O.T.C., Blank Stage and Fly-By Improv..

He received best actor at the Nebby Film Festival for his work in Clocked.

 Joshua has choreographed and fight directed shows such as The Three Musketeers, Dionysus was Such a Nice Man, Antigone, She Kills Monsters, Romeo and Juliet, Silence, Middletown, Marian: The True Story of Robin Hood, Living Dead in Denmark and others with Reno Little Theatre, foolsFURY Theatre Company, Foothill College Theatre Arts, Guilford College Theatre, GTCC Center for Performing Arts, UNL, Mid-Peninsula H.S., Lynbrook Act One Studio, Carrboro Arts Center, Presentation H.S. and San Francisco Youth Theatre. Joshua has taught stage combat with Google Arts, Berkeley Repertory School of Theatre, Shared Radiance and for colleges and universities.

Joshua also works as a digital producer, film editor, OBS Broadcaster and designer. He has created and edited films and commercials for American Conservatory Theatre, foolsFURY’s BUILD from Here: The Future of Ensemble Theater, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival’s Gala The Much Ado, San Francisco Youth Theatre’s She Kills Monsters and Nebraska Repertory Theatre. Joshua has worked as a Digital Producer and OBS streamer and designer on productions with foolsFURY’s digital convening BUILD Forward: Advocacy, Artistry, Adaptability, the French-American International School Theatre Department Cabaret, One-Act Festivals, San Carlos Children’s Theater Mirror, Mirror and Press Start, SquareTrade: Letter from Birmingham Jail, as the Digital Technical Director for Fuse Theatre’s COEXIST virtual theatre festival and is the Digital Technical Director for the international company The Theatre of Others where he has produced and live-streamed workshops, episodes, the theatrical production Limb from Limb as well as live edited and broadcasted Bright Light Burning at COP 28 in Dubai.

Joshua teaches classes and workshops in Acting, Movement, Directing, Stage Combat, Devising, Theatre/Film, Production and Improvisation. In addition he is a 200 hour certified Classical Yoga Teacher.
